- Sengai Gibon (1750-1837) was a Rinzai Zen monk and painter in the Edo period.
Born in Mino Province, he became a Rinzai monk at the age of 11 and set out on a pilgrimage at the age of 19. He later became a disciple of Gessen Zensui, received his inka at the age of 32, and set out on another pilgrimage. At the age of 39, he became the successor of Bankoku Shoteki at Shofukuji Temple in Hakata, and served as the abbot of Shofukuji Temple for 23 years. Before passing away at the age of 88, he left behind many elegant and refined paintings (Zen paintings).
